Maha Eliya or Horton Place is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Sri Lanka as well as a National Park with a unique biodiversity and archaeological value. This is a land of wonderful isolation and beautiful plains.
It is the only national park in the wetlands of Sri Lanka and the highest plateau in Sri Lanka. It is located in the central hills at an altitude of 1200 - 2300 m above sea level.
Environmentalists categorize this into different categories. L. C. Cook referred to the mangrove and lowland grasslands, Champion the mountain forests, and Chapton the tropical green forests.
Horton Plains was first discovered in the 1920s by Captain William Fisher and Colonel Albert Watson, both Englishmen. But after the visit of Governor Sir Horton, this was renamed Horton Plains. Named a Natural Forest in 1969.
Archaeological excavations into the Horton Plains began in 1992, focusing on the past ecology, climate and history of the Horton Plains. Ecologists believe that Horton Plains can provide information on the environmental conditions in Sri Lanka during the Pleistocene, the last ice age in the world. Research has shown that global warming caused rainfall over 9000 years ago to form in the Horton Plains.
BC The findings, which date back to about 8000 years ago, support the research of ecologists as well as geologists. The most common meewana and maharathmala have been identified as ancient plants.
Research has shown that humans lived during the Mesolithic Man and that they transformed into the agricultural age.
According to research, there are more than 100 species of plants here. 49 of them are endemic to Sri Lanka. Most of them are unique to Horton Plains. Fish species such as trout, native shrimp species, lichens that grow on rocks and plants that can be used as an indicator of environmental condition (a symbiotic association of algae and fungi, called a lichen. Horton Plains is a perfect biodiversity laboratory for flora and fauna.
